Punta Cana Airport set to make its mark on Caribbean travel

Duty Free Americas,
who won the concession to operate the duty free shops in the Dominican Republic's new Punta Cana airport, reports that sales have far exceeded their expectations since
Feb. 10, when they opened
for business in a temporary store. The airport handles flights from Central and South America to Russia, and the high-end Punta Cana resort caters to a wealthy traveler who has money and is willing to spend it, says DFA President Leon Falic. The company will open a 450 sq. meter permanent store this summer.

It was a tough start to the week, with the fall out from February's economic slowdown producing grim numbers all around the globe. International air traffic was no different, as IATA reports a deepening year-on- year demand slump for January.

Nevertheless, a brand new terminal opened at Punta Cana airport in the Dominican Republic, near the resort area of the same name. Punta Cana, one of only two airports in the Caribbean hosting direct flights to Russia, is poised to become one of the busiest airports in the islands. DFA is the new duty free operator in the airport.

People News dominates this issue of TMI. See Remy Cointreau's new structure, following Remy's departure from the Maxxium distribution network. Promotions are also ahead for two senior personnel at DFASS, which has added at least four new airlines to its rapidly growing portfolio over the past 12 months.

In more People News, William Grant & Sons Master Blender and Malt Maker David Stewart was recently awarded one of the top honors in the whisky business; while Pernod Ricard's Luis Rios has joined Godiva as trade marketing manager. Stila Cosmetics has also introduced its new international team. Chicago's Mayor Daley makes some announcements relevant to duty free operators throughout the region.

In an important development on the Supply Side, Brown-Forman will begin listing four of its biggest brands with one of Europe's largest travel retail buying pools.

Airport Retail. The Paradies Shoppes takes top honors at the Airport Revenue News awards ceremony last month as Best Airport Retailer. This is the 14th consecutive win for the Atlanta-based airport retailer.
